Thed Björk claimed a crucial final FIA TCR World Tour pole position on the legendary streets of Macau, beating Hyundai rival Mikel Azona by 23 thousands of a seconds, with Lynk & Co Cyan Racing team-mate Yann Ehrlacher in a strong third place.
The final qualifying session of the year provided extremely challenging conditions, with rain starting to fall on a dry track as the session began. The drivers battled a slippery circuit and several red flags due to incidents to claim valuable championship points.
Thed Björk has climbed to second place in the drivers' championship, trailing points leader Norbert Michelisz by ten points ahead of the penultimate race of the season tomorrow.
"Such a crazy feeling to get pole! The only focus was on my mental flow during the session. It was such a nice feeling. The car was perfectly set up from the beginning. Big thanks to Cyan Racing and Lynk & Co, my 03 TCR race car was fantastic," said Thed Björk.
The pole position and Yann Ehrlacher's third place has seen Lynk & Co Cyan Racing extending its team championship over BRC Hyundai to 62 points with 110 points still left to fight for in the two races of Saturday and Sunday.
"Congratulations to Thed and this result is really good for the team. We worked hard together during qualifying and to secure first and third is a good setup for the first race tomorrow. Our goal is still firmly set on defending our team title and fight for the drivers' title," said Yann Ehrlacher.
Ma Qing Hua finished eighth and secured a vital third place on the reversed Race 2 grid while team-mate Santiago Urrutia unfortunately suffered an electrical issue and will start from the back of the grid.
The first race of the Macau season finale starts at 12:40 local time/05:30 CET on Saturday and is broadcast LIVE via TCR TV and Macau GP TV.
